Southern Heritage Custom Construction - Whole House Renovation

“Woodland Park” Whole House Remodel

The renovation of the small existing cabin resulted in a modern, efficient home with an elegant rustic style. Originally built in 1956, the cabin had a small kitchen, living room, two small bedrooms, and one bathroom.

To bring the cabin up to current energy efficiency standards, the design included updates to all of the energy and utilities, while still maximizing the limited space and incorporating modern comforts. This required installing a new electrical pole and meter from the city to provide additional power and comply with updated building codes.

New additions included a master bathroom, laundry room, and study. The entire interior was removed to expose the wall framing and roof trusses, and old wiring, plumbing, and venting were removed to accommodate the new utilities. The laundry room addition also required a new crawl space foundation and matching log siding to be installed. New roofing shingles were installed to blend with the rustic style of the cabin. The installation of a new gas fireplace with stone veneer and a rustic mantel that was salvaged from an old barn beam added to the cabin’s charm. A tankless high-efficiency water heater was also installed to conserve space.

The original wood flooring was sanded and stained, and colored tiles were added to the bathrooms and kitchen to enhance the living areas. The kitchen was enlarged, and Rustic Birch cabinets were installed. The new interior doors and trim were made out of rustic knotty pine and custom stained. A rustic barn door with custom made iron hardware was installed in the master bedroom.

The client was thrilled with the final result and impressed with the fine craftsmanship and customer service, as they stated in their review below.

FANTASTIC! Doing a full remodel of a cabin that was built in 1956 was not an easy task but Southern Heritage Custom Construction was up to the challenge! Drew Kennedy managed the project from the start with professionalism and was conscious of even the smallest of details. It was obvious that he cared about the client, the quality of the work and making me happy with the finished project. He ensured that high quality work was performed by all involved, making sure the subs he used were trustworthy and experts in their field. I have the utmost respect for Drew and those he works with. I couldn’t be happier with my beautiful home!

Essential Tips When Choosing a Remodeling Company

Design and building experience is essential for successful remodels.

A company with an experienced team of professionals can create a plan that minimizes conflicts and provides solutions for complex remodels. Skilled craftsmen, with experience in their respective trades, can provide time-saving methods and reliable solutions.

Accountability is crucial when choosing a home remodeling company.

Being insured and licensed with the local building department ensures that the remodel is done according to approved building codes. A remodeling company pulling its permits will have the support of the building department for advice and problem-solving. Being a member of a local or national association can also show that the remodeler is actively building their skills and developing accountability with these organizations (e.g. BBB, NHBA, NADRA, etc.).

Referrals from past clients are the best compliments.

Positive reviews from past clients require a lot of hard work and communication to ensure that the remodel goes well and is rewarding to the homeowner. Asking for a phone call with a past client to discuss their experience with the company and their work can be helpful. Most reputable remodeling companies have several past clients who can discuss or show their past work to prospective clients on behalf of the remodeler. Reviews can sometimes reveal the character of the company owner and how they run the company.

Communication is key when working with a company to remodel your home.

It is the remodeling company’s responsibility to manage expectations from start to finish with the homeowner. This takes time to discuss details and double-check to ensure that the homeowner and builder both understand the process and the finished product. The level of communication can often be determined during the design phase while working out the details. “Effective communication is a key factor in the success of your product” – Jesse James Garrett.
